With the extreme dependence on electricity that so much of our society’s technology relies on to function, there is an ever-present potential for danger if that power supply is interrupted or imbalanced. While a total loss of electrical power can lose information or put much of what we take for granted out of action, it is the spikes and fluctuations of that electrical supply that can cause the worst damage. A spike in the regular flow can burn out sensitive electronic equipment and fluctuating current can put a strain on the motors that use it and cause damage that will shorten their effective lives.
